On October 1, 2014, as promised, the new warehouse identified as warehouse #8 was put into service. All of the pieces have finally come together. The sprinkler system went into service on September the 30th. Phil Allen and Larry Ruff have completed most of the electrical wiring. The sprinkler room will be completed during the week of October the 6th. There are a few items of landscaping yet to be completed.

The River Otter
In 1995, the IDNR reintroduced the River Otter to Indiana after their population was depleted due to habitat loss, trapping, and pollution. Since then, they are reported to live in 87% of Indiana’s counties and continue to grow. It has become one of Indiana’s true conservation success story.
Forest Pest Update
Thousand Cankers Disease, TCD, has not yet been detected in Indiana but is certainly of concern. This disease was originally detected in the southwest United States and affects walnut trees. The disease is spread by the walnut twig beetle as it bores into branches, feeds on the tree tissue, and then deposits the fungus.
New Warehouse Groundbreaking
Over the last three years we have seen the economy slowly improve. In preparation for better market conditions we built the Milan sawmill, which is producing near its target rates, making fine quality Pike Brand hardwoods. As we continue to see improving lumber markets, the need for more capacity is required if we are going to take advantage of a stronger economy.
Carbon Announces New Production Manager
On January 1, 2014, Kyle Gunderson was promoted to Carbon Production Manager. He joined Pike Lumber Company in June, 2007 after graduating from the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point with a Forestry degree.
New Dry Kilns Completed
We are excited to announce we have completed construction of our new dry kilns. These new dry kilns consist of 6 package chamber-type Brunner-Hildebrand kilns which provide us with much-needed additional drying capacity.

US Forest Service Forest Inventory & Analysis Program
According to the US Forest Service Forest Inventory and Analysis Program (FIA), in cooperation with the Indiana DNR has been taking measurements on research plots across Indiana since the 1950s. Comprehensive reports of previous inventories are dated 1950, 1967, 1986, 1998, 2003, and 2008.
Grape Vines
Vines in your woods can be fun for the kids to swing on and pretend to be Tarzan, but they are very harmful to the trees. Wild Grape and Poison Ivy both can be found hanging in trees.
