Latin Name: Tilia Americana
Characteristics of the Tree: This medium size tree averages a height of 20m (65ft) and a diameter of 600mm (2ft). The straight trunk is often free of branches for much of its length.
Characteristics of the Wood: The straight-grained wood has a fine, even texture. It is light in weight and there is little contrast between late-wood and earlywood; creamy white when first cut turning pale brown on exposure.
Common Uses: Carving, turnery, joinery, pattern making, piano keys, drawing boards, venetian blinds, picture frame mouldings and plywood.
Workability: It can be easily and cleanly worked with hand and machine tools, and can be brought to a fine surface finish. It glues well.
Finishing: It accepts stain well and can be polished to a fine finish.
Average Dry Weight: 416 kg.m3 (26lb/ft3).
